The ATHCC course runs annually at the Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen. In the course, the students learn research methods in human–computer interaction (HCI).
The course is designed around the three types of HCI research:
conceptual: literature review
empirical: user studies
constructive: technical artefact and dataset evaluations
Learning happens through
Introductory lectures about research methods related to the three types of HCI research.
Reading, presenting, and discussing HCI research papers in the class.
Four assignments: Assignments 1-3 correspond to each of the three types of HCI research (conceptual, empirical, and constructive), and Assignment 4 is about understanding the field of HCI as a whole.
The course runs for 8 weeks from February to April (Block 3), with a workload of 7.5 ECTS. The course has in the past two years been full, the department limiting the registration count to 40 (in 2024) and 50 (in 2023) based on the allocated classroom sizes.
The course is taught by Joanna Bergström and Valkyrie Savage.
The students apply research methods in HCI topics of their choice in th course. You can find selected reports from previous years here.
The course is targeted to the students of the Computer Science and Cognitive and Data Science study programmes, as well as exchange students in similar programs. The students can sign up for the course as usual, following the links on the course's UCPH site.
