Locomotion in virtual reality remains one of the most essential aspects of an immersive experience. While locomotion like mapping physical walking to virtual walking is optimal, we can’t always rely on it because of factors such as scale, space and physical limitations. To handle this, we made a study where we both implemented and evaluated The Flying Carpet, which allows the user to travel faster and also to places not accessible before. Our results show that the user can use The Flying Carpet with precision to reach a target faster while keeping embodiment high and VR sickness low. This study contributes a new way to handle the unnatural locomotion technique of flying in VR.
